Feng Shui: What It Is and How It Works

It's time to talk interiors, more specifically, the home. This blog is dedicated to posts about self improvement, wellness and self love. One of the biggest ways to give back to yourself is having a safe and comfortable place to call home. Interior design shouldn't be taken lightly; the environment dictates habits, and a calm space is needed to achieve a calm state of mind. This post shares a few tips based on the Chinese practice of Feng Shui, showing how to turn a home into a sanctuary that brings wealth, health and happiness.

Let's Talk Feng Shui

Pronounced fung shway, Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that involves bringing harmony to an environment. It is based on the idea that energy (known as "Chi") affects wellbeing. By arranging a home in a certain way, the energy in the environment can shift to support greater success, health and happiness.

Here's how Feng Shui can improve a home:

Incorporate the Five Elements

  • Wood (growth, creativity): represented by plants, wooden furniture, and green colours.
  • Fire (passion, energy): candles, fireplaces, and red or orange colours bring warmth.
  • Earth (stability, grounding): stones, ceramics, and earthy tones promote calm.
  • Metal (clarity, precision): metal objects and white or metallic colours enhance focus.
  • Water (flow, abundance): mirrors, fountains, and blue or black hues encourage movement and prosperity.

Balance the Yin and Yang Energies

Yin (soft, feminine and quiet) and Yang (active, masculine and bold) should be equally balanced throughout the home. For example, a bedroom benefits from more Yin energy (soft lighting, calming colours), while an office benefits from more Yang energy (bright light, energising colours).

Declutter the Space to Declutter the Mind

Clutter blocks the free flow of chi (energy), leading to stagnation in different areas of life. A clean and tidy space allows energy to move freely, bringing more clarity and prosperity.

The Power of Mirrors

Mirrors are powerful in Feng Shui, as they reflect energy. They can be used to expand space and bring in more light, but should never reflect clutter, as this doubles negative energy.

The "Mouth of the Home"

The front door is where energy enters the home. Keeping it clean, bright, and inviting allows positive energy, opportunities, and good fortune to flow inside.
